Chocolate sure is nice
He has to grow on you. When a friend first showed me Tom Waits I thought he was half-insane. I just sorta had to work my way up to him listening to new artists and picking someone just a little crazier each time.
If you like classic music, but want someone a little different I’d check out Andrew Bird. He started out classically trained and ended up playin gypsy jazz/folk/indie rock. I’d look up Sweetmatter, Weather Systems and his Live From the Basement performance

I know what you mean. Criticism is OK. I used to dislike Waits. I am classically trained but now days I am looking for people who competently break some rules, say something about themselves, and still maintain incredible musicality in their performance. Tom Waits fills all that for me right now. So he is a favorite of mine. But so are many of the greats from the Romantic era.
