Antioxidant Drinks

There is a lot of antioxidant drinks on the market out there. Because "antioxidant" seems to be the new health buzzword, many clever advertisers will stick it on a can just to catch people's eye, but it'll be a total sham.
Why? Well, because it sells. But why is it a sham? Real antioxidants are found in real whole foods. In most canned drinks claiming to contain "antioxidants" the amount of real antioxidants is miniscule (and who knows if they are still active).
The claim might be coming from trace amounts of some kind of fruit concentrate they added, but usually is totally counteracted by loads of sugar, preservatives and other unhealthy ingredients in the drink.
Therefore, they can make the claim because the original fruit was very high in antioxidants, but the drink itself mostly likely wasn't even tested for antioxidant value! It might be totally lost, depending on the quality and freshness of the fruit used.

The worst is when what is advertised is not even in the ingredient list! It might just be the flavor!
For instance you heard that acai berry is very high in antioxidants and you see an "acai berry" drink. Well, check the ingredient list, because chances are you are missing the fine print and there is NO ACAI WHATSOEVER - instead: grape juice concentrate, apple juice concentrate, etc.
I know...hard to believe, but I have seen these kind of drinks and been totally shocked. But what more can we expect from clever advertisers?
There are others fruit drinks that have been popular; such as pomegranate, blueberry, coffee cherry, goji, noni or acai. But those berries (even fresh, not to mention pasteurized) do not have the same antioxidant value as cacao (number one super food!)
These berry drinks are delicious, don't get me wrong, but maybe not as high in antioxidant value as you might think. Read more at Antioxidant Buzz
